"Hunger is there. Like, he wants to make a bigger film now": Zoya Akhtar on Superboys of Malegaon's Real Star Nasir Shaikh’s Evolution

Zoya

MUMBAI: Reema Kagti’s Superboys of Malegaon is currently one of the most talked-about films, eagerly anticipated by audiences after a successful run on the film festival circuit. Based on the true story of Nasir Shaikh, an aspiring filmmaker from the small town of Malegaon, the film captures his journey of making movies with his friends for the local audience. The story is being brought to life by acclaimed filmmakers Zoya Akhtar, Reema Kagti, and Farhan Akhtar. In a recent interview, Zoya Akhtar spoke about Nasir’s evolution over time and how, despite the changes, he still possesses the same passion and hunger for filmmaking. The film promises an inspiring narrative about dreams, resilience, and the power of storytelling.

Zoya described his evolution saying, “Well, he’s changed as much as we have. So everyone’s older, wiser, a little less bombastic, you know, more mature, more comfortable with themselves. I’m a filmmaker. He’s a filmmaker. We have all grown up.” “But that hunger is there. Like, he wants to make a bigger film now. He wants to work in Malegaon, but he’s already writing another movie. So that hunger, the compulsion, to actually create is still there,” added the filmmaker.

Following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and acclaimed screenings at the 68th BFI London Film Festival, Red Sea International Film Festival, and more, the film has continued to garner global recognition, including a Young Cineastes Special Mention at the 2025 Palm Springs International Film Festival.

An Amazon MGM Studios, Excel Entertainment, and Tiger Baby production, Superboys of Malegaon is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar, Zoya Akhtar, and Reema Kagti. Written by Varun Grover, Superboys of Malegaon boasts a versatile ensemble cast, including Adarsh Gourav, Vineet Kumar Singh, and Shashank Arora in lead roles. The film is set to release in theaters on February 28 across India, the US, UK, UAE, Australia, and New Zealand.
