MUMBAI: The much-awaited film Darlings finally released on Netflix on August 5. The black comedy-drama film is co-produced by Alia Bhatt’s Eternal Sunshine Productions and Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment.
The film also stars Shefali Shah, Vijay Varma and Roshan Mathew in important roles. Darlings marks the second collaboration between Bhatt and SRK after the 2016 film Dear Zindagi, where the duo starred in lead roles.
The story of Darlings is set against the backdrop of a lower-middle-class family in Mumbai. Alia plays Badru Shaikh, who is married to Hamza Shaikh (Vijay Verma), an alcoholic and volatile man. Badru hopes that her husband will someday quit alcohol and mend his ways. But when his behaviour becomes too intolerable, Badru and her mother Shamshunissa (Shefali Shah), seek revenge.
Alia Bhatt, in an interview, said she was keen on producing and acting in Darlings for its powerful story. “I am really excited to be part of Darlings; it’s a powerful story with a lot of humour and doses of dark comedy. I am thrilled to have Darlings as my first film as a producer, that too in collaboration with my favourite, Shah Rukh Khan and Red Chillies,” the actress had said in a statement, as per the Indian Express.
Now, as per Times of India, Darlings was sold to Netflix for a whopping Rs 80 crore. Yes, you read that right!
Darlings is directed by debutant director Jasmeet K Reen, and jointly written by Reen and Parveez Sheikh.
