Saif Ali Khan's Tandav is surrounded by these controversies

MUMBAI: Tandav, a political drama, has been in the news ever since it aired. It stars Saif Ali Khan, Dimple Kapadia, Sunil Grover, Kumud Misra, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Sarah Jane Dias, Kritika Kamra, Dino Morea, Sandhya Mridul, Amyra Dastur, and Anup Soni. The series stars Saif in the role of a powerful politician and revolves around the power struggle after the death of a Prime Minister.

A certain scene Mohammed Zeeshan Ayuub playing Lord Shiva in a stage play. His character says, "Azaadi, what the..." Following this, a banter takes place after the narrator tells Lord Shiva that he needs to do something to improve his popularity and says that Lord Ram's popularity is increasing on social media. Many have taken offense to the said scene and accused the makers of insulting Hindu deities and hurting the religious sentiments of the Hindus. 

- BJP MP Manoj Kotak demanded a ban on Tandav and accused the makers of ridiculing Hindi deities. "Different organisations and individuals have complained that Hindu Gods and Goddesses have been ridiculed in Tandav web series. Comments have been passed about them," he wrote to I&B Minister Prakash Javadekar. He also talked about the censorship of OTT platforms. 

- MLA Ram Kadam in Maharashtra said that the said scene should be removed from the show. He also demanded an apology from Zeeshan. "Tandava will be boycotted until necessary changes are made. #BanTandavNow," read his tweet. 

- Former UP chief minister, Mayawati, also took to Twitter to share her opinion on the row and said that the objectionable scene should be removed from the show. "’ताण्डव’ वेब सीरीज में धार्मिक व जातीय आदि भावना को आहत करने वाले कुछ दृश्यों को लेकर विरोध दर्ज किए जा रहे हैं, जिसके सम्बंध में जो भी आपत्तिजनक है उन्हें हटा दिया जाना उचित होगा ताकि देश में कहीं भी शान्ति, सौहार्द व आपसी भाईचारे का वातावरण खराब न हो।" read her tweet. 

- Later, an FIR was also registered against Amazon India original content head Aparna Purohit, creator Ali Abbas Zafar, producer Himanshu Krishna Mehra, writer Gaurav Solanki and others at the Hazratganj police station of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh.

- Another FIR was filed in Greater Noida against the makers of the web series. They were accused of showing UP Police in a bad light and hurting religious sentiments. The FIR has named Ali Abbas Zafar, Aparna Purohit, Himanshu Krishna Mehra, and Gaurav Solanki and actors Saif Ali Khan, Dimple Kapadia, and Sunil Grover.

Team Tandav issued an apology on social media. It read, "Our sincere apologies. We have been closely monitoring viewer reactions to the web series Tandav and today during a discussion, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has informed us regarding a large number of grievances and petitions received on various facets of the web series with serious concerns and apprehensions regarding its content hurting the sentiments of the people."
