MUMBAI : When the Multi-genre music festival South Side Story came back to New Delhi on 31st August, it went successfully. In fact, it went so well that they are now coming back to Mumbai after seeing such an amazing response. The music festival is coming to Mumbai on 14th December.

This time, it is going to be refreshingly intimate and niche for the true lovers of South Indian music, culture, and food. Agam – The Band will headline the show and we will also get to see some strong rap forces coming in as Yung Raja, Vedan, Sooraj Santhosh, and Pal Dabba will mark their debut on the South Side Story stage.

In an exclusive interview with Tellychakkar, Vedan talked about making his debut at the show, independent artists taking over, and much more.

Making a debut at SSS, how do you feel about the event, something that is so unique and yet so essential for music lovers in order to know the culture better?

Vedan said, “Feels incredibly special right now to represent the culture I was born and raised. The blend of music and culture gives something for everyone.”

Do you think mainstream music is being taken over by independent artists as we are slowly getting to see so many artists making their way into movies and coming out with albums?

Vedan said, “This is high-time for Indian Independent Music. We are creating an industry of our own now. We no longer have to look at the west for it. What we, as talents do here is a journey like no other. The lines between the mainstream and the independent are slowly disappearing.”

Rap game has levelled up really high in India. Do you think it’s time we go international, as in get featured in tracks of foreign artists? Which foreign rapper would you like to collaborate with?

Vedan said, “We are international. Not just now but we were and we still are. The inspiration that rappers took and adapted from our culture has been there. Be it a beat, or the references or the music, we all have been inspiring for some time. Now it’s time for us to do that and yes we are doing that now. And in the case of a track featuring, the tables have turned, look at ASAP being featured in Hanuman’s track. If you ask me which foreign artist that I would want to collaborate with, there’s plenty, but right now I’d say Kendrick. But I like to put out a track with Yogi B ayya, I always considered him a legend in the game and a top-class international artist.”

What made this fire of rap start in you? Which artist led you to start with rap?

Vedan said, “It’s the streets that I was raised gave me the strength and the fire to perform and put out music. For me it’s not a mere expression, rap defines my existence. So many artist has inspired and led me to this. Names like Tupac, Yogi B and many more.”

What’s a crazy idea of collaboration that you have? As in a rap in an EDM track as a drop? Or something crazier?

Vedan said, “I have a serious fondness and affection towards Heavy Metal. That’s all I want to say. You guys just have to wait to see some crazier stuff rolling out.”

Tell us about your upcoming projects?

Vedan said, “A few tracks for a label, then few independent releases too. Of course there is shows and few movie enquiries. Importantly the work with my very own label ‘Karupp Records’, we are building towards a new dawn in South Asian Hip-Hop.”

This was our conversation with Vedan before the show, which will be held in Mumbai on 14th December.
