MUMBAI: Folklore and horror might just be Anushka Sharma-led Clean Slate Films’ favourite genre. In a new trailer that was dropped by Netflix today, the much-awaited Bulbbul depicts a child bride in an erstwhile era in Bengal followed by death and chaos. The Clean Slate Films has previously produced a horror mystery film in 2018 called Pari, starring Anushka. Bulbbul director Dutt wrote another film for Clean Slate Films in 2017, the comedy-drama Phillauri, also starring Anushka, which was a horror comedy.

The two minute trailer depicts a period piece with red and white colour themes amidst old world tropes and superstitions. The story revolves around Satya and his brother’s child bride, Bulbbul, who were inseparable until he was sent to England for his higher education. On his return, Bulbbul has been abandoned by his brother and now lives a solitary existence and has dedicated herself to the welfare of the people. But their village is plagued by mysterious deaths and stories of a haunting by a woman who lives in the trees. An evil ‘chudail with the inverted feet’ is mentioned a few times in the trailer pointing to the horror element in the film.
Interestingly, Bulbbul is Netflix’s seventh original film from India this year, after Ghost Stories, Yeh Ballet, Guilty, Maska, Mrs. Serial Killer, and Choked. While none of the films have gotten rave reviews, Bulbbul could prove to be a game changer for Netflix India’s content.
The prominent faces that emerge in the trailer is of Rahul Bose, Parambrata Chattopadhyay and Paoli Dam which will no doubt add to the authenticity of the 20th century Bengal folklore based film. With only five days to release (June 24), the buzz around the movie is building it. Whether it will live up to its mark, we will soon find out.
