Is too much of moisturiser harmful for your skin? Here's how to avoid the damage

We all know winter is a time for itchy, flaky and dry skin, which leads us to step up our moisturising game. Though it’s essential to do so, it also gets quite tempting to go overboard with the hydration. But, is that a good thing?

MUMBAI: We all know winter is a time for itchy, flaky and dry skin, which leads us to step up our moisturising game. Though it’s essential to do so, it also gets quite tempting to go overboard with the hydration. After all, the more, the merrier, right? Well, not really! In fact, applying too much moisturiser can backfire and damage your skin.

Here’s the lowdown of everything you need to know about over-moisturising your skin, including signs to look out for and how to prevent it.

Believe it or not, most of us already over-moisturise our face unknowingly, especially during the winters. There is a common misconception that the more moisturiser you apply, the more effective it will be.

However, in reality, moisturisers are usually very concentrated, and the good ones only require a small amount. Applying more than you actually need is not only unnecessary, but can also worsen your skin.

Wondering how to know whether you are over-moisturising your skin or not? Here are some of the signs that indicate you’re applying too much moisturiser.

1. You have clogged pores. Over-moisturising weakens your skin barrier, which results in clogged pores, blackheads, and whiteheads.

2. You are breaking out more than you usually do. The excess, unabsorbed layer by your skin that sits on top of your face, and the greasiness attract dirt and bacteria, leading to pimples.

3. Your skin has become drier. Ever thought why your skin feels dry even after applying layers after layers of moisturiser? This is a very common symptom of over-moisturising your skin.

4. There are small bumps all over your face. If your skin is covered with red tiny bumps, it’s a sign you are moisturising too much.

Sebum production keeps our skin healthy, nourished and moisturised. But when you over-moisturise, your skin thinks you already have enough, and stops producing the amount of sebum you require for maintaining good skin. This leads to dull, dry, and tired skin.

As mentioned before, it also causes acne, clogged pores, blackheads, and bumps because there is an increase in the build-up of dead skin cells.

There are two main ways to prevent over-moisturising your face. One is to apply the moisturiser when your skin is still damp. This provides more hydration than you’d get when applied on dry skin. Thus, you don’t feel the need to apply that extra layer, which can damage your skin.

Another great way is to exfoliate your skin with a chemical exfoliant once a week before applying your moisturiser. This ensures your moisturiser doesn’t trap the dead skin cells, which can cause clogged pores.
