MUMBAI : So here’s a scenario: You just bought your new earphones, and you read the box which has a statement saying ‘IPX4 certified’, and now you are left confused. Just like this, there are various types of IP ratings that have different meanings. Well, don’t worry because we will now break down the meaning of the various IP ratings that are given to devices, and how you can identify them.
The IP code, or Ingress Protection code is a classification standard that rates how well protected your device is from water or dust entering it. IP codes are developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), who provide guidelines to the degree of protection given by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures against intrusion of dust, accidental contact, and water. This helps provide more detailed information, rather than devices using open-ended terms like ‘waterproof’ or ‘water and dust resistant’.

A standard IP code consists of the IP identification, and then two different digits that describe the level of protection. Also, IP codes do not have hyphens in them. The first digit describes the level of protection against solid particles like dust, and is rated on a scale of 0-6 (0 being no protection, and 6 being complete protection). Whereas, the second digit describes the level of protection against liquids like water and more, and is rated on a scale of 0-9 (0 being no protection, and 9 being protection against close-range, high temperature sprays).
IP ratings can be given for any kind of device. Smartphones, earphones, wearables like smartwatches or smart bands, flashlights, cameras, and even your outlets at home. It is important to know these IP ratings before purchasing your next device so that you can be sure that the device will work in the intended environment. There are times when smartphones or some devices do not come with IP ratings, but that does not mean that they are not water resistant at all. Getting a device IP certified costs a lot of money, which is why companies make products waterproof without getting the certification.
