On one hand we have disclaimers running in cinema halls warning people about the harmful side effects of cigarette smoking, on the other, you have an actress of Kajol's stature saying that 90% of India smokes.
At FICCI Frames 2014, Kajol who was one of the speakers for the afternoon session on 'Censorship', passed this remark while talking on censorship of cigarette smoking. Supporting the creative freedom that a director should have, Kajol emphasized on the fact that censorship impacts the creativity of the director who wants to show his actor smoking or the smoke emanating from the cigarette all of which are subjected to disclaimer warnings.
All looked good until Kajol went a step ahead and said, "90% of India smokes!"
While everyone looked on with incredulity hoping that it was just a joke on Kajol's part, the actress went on to buttress her statement by saying, "Come on guys. Tell me how many of you present in this room took a smoke break."
Statistics however tell a different tale altogether. A recent study states that India gained 35 million smokers bringing its total to 110 million even though the smoking rate fell from 19 to 13 percent of the population.
Tell us what do you think? Is Kajol right when she says 90% of India smokes? Hit the comment section below.
