Rumours and reports that singer-musician Adnan Sami of Pakistani origin has been asked to leave India, are just not true.
The singer is aghast at reports of his expulsion from India doing the rounds.
Says Adnan, “This is my home. India is where I’ve found my success, my career. I feel I belong here. But unfortunately I don’t have an Indian passport yet. In the eyes of the law that makes me a foreigner. I wait for the day when that would change.”
Sighing deeply over the irony of the police serving him notice for overstaying Adnan says, “Overstay toh mehmaan karte hain. Main to iss desh mein 14 saal se hoon. Yeh mera ghar hai. I need to apply for a fresh visa periodically. And you can only apply for it after the earlier visa expires. My visa expired on 6 October and I duly and dutifully applied for a fresh visa. If the time being taken to issue a fresh visa is a little longer than usual how am I to be blamed for it? And where is the question of leaving the country? Once you have applied for a visa there is no way you can leave.”
A close friend of Adnan feels he is being unduly persecuted. “This whole issue of his nationality and visa was brought up by the same people who have been hounding Adnan for some years now, trying to create trouble in his life every step of his way. The delay in issuing him a fresh visa is bureaucratic. How is Adnan in any way responsible? And where will he go? This is his home.”
