MUMBAI: Renowned filmmaker Anubhav Sinha, known for thought-provoking films like Thappad, Mulk, and Article 15, as well as the recent hit streaming series IC 814, recently shared an unforgettable anecdote from his early television days. Reflecting on his experience directing the legendary Shammi Kapoor in the TV show Shikast, Sinha recounted how offering the veteran actor a negative role led to a reaction he would never forget.
In a candid interview, Sinha recalled the moment he approached Kapoor for the antagonist’s role. Taken aback, the charismatic star confronted him with playful indignation, exclaiming, “How dare you call me for this serial?” He was visibly surprised that Sinha would even consider him for such a role. However, after his initial disbelief, Kapoor eventually agreed—though he firmly laid down his conditions, making it clear that he would leave the set by 4-5 PM every day.
Sinha also shared a heartwarming instance that showcased Kapoor’s generosity on set. After filming the pilot episode, a particular scene required capturing the reflection of actor Vineet Kumar on a Mercedes. As Sinha worked behind the camera, Kapoor, sitting nearby, admired the shot. When the director gently reminded him that it was already past 10 PM—far beyond his usual schedule—Kapoor chuckled and remarked, “Gaadi meri hai” (“It’s my car”), humorously implying that he had every right to stay. Though it wasn’t even his scene, Kapoor remained on set, moved by the dedication of the crew.
This rare blend of warmth, professionalism, and larger-than-life charm cemented Shammi Kapoor’s legacy not just as an unforgettable actor, but as an endearing presence who left an indelible mark on everyone he worked with—including a young Anubhav Sinha.
