MUMBAI: Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has reacted to comments made recently by actor Pankaj Jha. Pankaj had referred to the filmmaker as "spinless" in an interview for keeping his word by offering him the character of Sultan Qureshi in Gangs of Wasseypur, which Pankaj Tripathi ultimately portrayed.

Jha is currently receiving praise for his portrayal of Vidhayak in the most recent season of Panchayat, having stated that Kashyap contacted him about his role in Gangs of Wasseypur while he was filming in Patna. The actor later revealed that Pankaj Tripathi had been cast in his place, despite his first claim to have told him he was in the middle of a film and would return in a day or two.

In a conversation with the well-known news site, Kashyap recalled the sequence of events and said that Jha moved to an Osho retreat in Pune during the filming of his 2010 movie The Girl in Yellow Boots. “We were on a tight budget and could not wait for him. We made the film in a very different condition and budget. Now he may be thinking that after 20 years, he could have become Pankaj Tripathi,” he said.

In an interview with another news portal, Pankaj Jha called himself a “director-making actor,” and took jabs at Kashyap. “While films like Satya and Gulaal create actors, they also make directors. But there are so many timid and spineless people here that they can’t even keep their word,” he said with a smirk. “Later, I found out that the director himself was in a bad situation, getting no work, and was doing 36 different jobs on this project.”

Jha and Kashyap have previously collaborated on films such as Gulaal and Black Friday. The director claimed that Jha is an inaccessible individual. “He has actually been my go-to actor… I would love to work with him again, but the fact is, he is not accessible at all,” Kashyap said.

Jha provided clarification on his statement and claimed he was misquoted in a recent interview with a well-known news source. The actor declared that in all of his previous interviews, he had "never mentioned" the name of "any Tripathi."

“You can go listen to all of my interviews, you will know I haven’t mentioned anybody’s name at all. This is a very childish thing to do. Why will I go talk all this to anybody? Media always needs masala, I never said anything such, they just made it up. Becoming an actor is not the ultimate achievement. Just like how every actor wants to become a big star, similarly several journalists are also running behind fame. They make up stories to gain attention and recognition,” he said.

Anurag Kashyap is waiting for the release of Bad Cop. Gulshan Devaiah plays a gangster in the Disney Plus Hotstar series, which he plays in a dual role.
