The Bombay Talkies, founded by Himanshu Rai, Rajnarayan Dube and Devika Rani in 1934, that gave us films like Achut Kanya, Kangan and Bandhan among others and launched names like Ashok Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Madhubala, Raj Kapoor, Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Satyajit Ray, Bimal Roy, Dev Anand and Mehmood, to name a few, is all set to be re-launched by Abhay Kumar, grandson of Rajnarayan Dube. The iconic studio was closed down in 1954.
The first film of the revived banner has been titled Chahe Koi Mujhe Junglee Kahen. It will also mark the debut of Abhay as an actor. Artistes like Mallika Sherawat, Tusshar Kapoor and Vinay Pathak are also likely to be included in the star cast.
Talking to us, Abhay said that it was due to public demand that he made up his mind to re-launch the banner. “Thanks to the fans, well-wishers of Bombay Talkies and film connoisseurs from across the country and the globe that did embolden me to re-launch the much revered production house,” he averred.
Without divulging more about the story of the film, Abhay said that reading the title one is reminded of the most famous Shammi Kapoor and Saira Banu movie. This project has been inspired by the film and more importantly by Saira Banu’s character in the said film.
The film is to be directed by Nasirr Khan, son of yesteryear’s late comedian Johnny Walker. But why Nasirr? “After all it’s the family lineage that also counts. His passion and technical understanding gave him an edge,” Abhay quipped.
The other film to be launched by the re-emerging studio has been titled Zakhmi that will feature Sayali Bhagat, Mithun Chakraborty besides Abhay Kumar.
