Priyanka Chopra’s nani was born Christian born as Mary John in St John’s Attamangalam parish in Kumarakom, before marrying a Hindu boy. She had apparently expressed a wish to be buried at the same church.

According to a website, a source has mentioned that her nani was refused a burial at Kumarakom Parish because she was married to a Hindu. The sources added to the site, "Authorities at the Kumarakom Parish refused to let the burial take place. They stated that it was against the rules as PC’s grand-mom had married a Hindu. One is automatically disowned by the church under such circumstances. She could have re-joined the church while alive. But once a person is dead, They cannot accept the body for burial.”
