MUMBAI: When Farah Khan chose to direct her debut Hindi film, she was already well-known in Bollywood as a choreographer. Farah placed the same value on casting vital supporting roles for Shah Rukh Khan, who played the lead in the movie Main Hoon Na. Naseeruddin Shah was originally offered the character of Raghavan, the antagonist, in a previous interview in which Farah discussed casting him in the movie.
When Farah was questioned over Naseer's casting in the movie in an exchange posted on IFTDA Official's YouTube page, she initially responded with a smile., “That’s a very long story. Naseer will kill me.” She then shared, “I had first gone to Naseer to play the villain’s role. We went to many people for the villain’s role. We first went to Naseer and he made a fuss and you know how Naseer is… he is very moody. He said I can’t do it.”
She went on to say that actors like Nana Patekar and Kamal Haasan turned down the part, which was eventually taken up by Suniel Shetty, who delighted at the chance to play a villain. Farah claimed that even after casting Raghavan, she still needed to cast Shah Rukh's father, so she visited Naseeruddin Shah again.
“Then there was a 10-day role of Shah Rukh’s father for which I went back to Naseer. I said abhi yeh toh kar lo,” she recalled.
Farah claimed that because Naseer is such a moody actor, he frequently troubled her throughout the shoot, causing her to complete the 10-day role in just six days.
“Naseer ne mujhe itna tang kia ki maine 10 din ka role 6 din mein khatam kar dia. I said iska shooting jaldi khatam karo but after that he has been wonderful. I love Naseer (Naseer troubled me so much that I finished his 10-day shoot in just 6 days . I said finish his shoot quickly),” she recalled.
In the movie, Naseeruddin Shah portrayed Brig Shekhar Prasad Sharma, whose demise triggers the events of the film.
