Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (IMPPA) are up in arms against Mrityunjay Devvrat directed ‘The Bastard Child.’ IMPPA it seems is displeased with the controversial title and have refused to approve the same. This hasn’t gone down well with the director, Mrityunjay Devvrat who feels that he is being troubled only because he doesn’t have enough sources. Says Mrityunjay, “I don’t understand why they are objecting because only the Censor Board has the authority to reject titles. Naajayaz (1995), Kaminey (2009) and Inglourious Basterds (2009) are acceptable but not my title. The dictionary defines ‘bastard’ as a child born out of wedlock. It becomes profane only when society uses it in the wrong sense.”
IMPPA president TP Aggarwal however holds a different view. Says Aggarwal, “I spoke to the Film Makers Combined and they found the title abusive so they rejected it. I spoke to them to reconsider. Now if the film-maker reapplies, we will reconsider.”
The Bastard Child deals with the birth of Bangladesh in 1971 and focuses on the genocide that took place where many women were raped and killed. Talking about the movie, Mrityunjay says, “The Bastard Child is a gripping and compelling reconstruction of the events that took place in Bangladesh, in 1971. Not a single soul remained without the tears of sorrow in their eyes for years to come since then. If not anything, it would be only fair to bring out the reality for the world to see.”
History is replete with examples of controversial films facing multiple protests on its release. When asked about the same, Mrityunjay says, ´“It might face protests in Bangladesh but I will release it there as I spent part of my childhood in the country. This is a small token from my end.”
The Bastard Child, which is a based on a true story, has an impressive star cast ranging from veterans like Farooque Shaikh, Victor Banerjee and Pavan Malhotra to Raima Sen and Indraneil Sengupta. Mrityunjay is aiming to release the movie on the 27th of December.
