Margarita with a straw will throw light on people afflicted by cerebral palsy. Among the various aspects of their lives tapped, one of them happens to be about their sexual needs. In a country, where speaking about sex itself is a whispered subject, the sexual desires of the disabled are often ignored.
Kalki who plays the lead role in the movie too was unaware about the sexual needs of the differently abled children. "It was like an enlightenment for me. I too had never ever thought about their sexuality and what their desires are. Cerebral palsy only affects your motor skills. You emotions are intact and like any other human beings, you have your needs and desire too."
The movie will also see Kalki shedding some serious inhibitions. Talking about the naked and intimate sex scenes, Kalki says, "When Shonali (director) asked me if I would be comfortable doing an intimate scene, I said I am totally comfortable with my naked body. The scene is integral to the plot of the film and I had no problems doing it. Also I am not showing off my body. People tend to associate sex to titillation. We have seen how sensuously sex is depicted in our movies with oil and all being applied on the body. But here it is different. As a cerebral palsy affected patient, I couldn't undress myself. There is a scene where my mother in the movie is giving me a bath and I am naked in that scene. But there is no sex or intimacy involved in there."
Ask her if Indian audience is open to such a film, Kalki says, "We greatly underestimate our audience. Firstly we cannot make films that please everyone. Also, the heart of the film is this greater emotional mother-daughter bond that will find resonance with audience."
Margarita with a straw opens in theaters this Friday.
