"I didn’t leave the house for a year after my debut film flopped,"-Mimoh Chakraborty

MUMBAI: Mimoh Chakraborty, who is the son of legendary actor Mithun Chakraborty and Yogeeta Bali, had a very tough start to his acting journey. In 2008, he made his debut with the film Jimmy, but things didn’t go as planned. The film failed at the box office right from the first day, and Mimoh says that failure broke him completely.
In a recent interview with Digital Commentary, Mimoh, who now goes by the name Mahakshay, opened up about how deeply the failure of Jimmy affected him.

He shared, “I didn’t leave the house for a year. I felt like my life was over. On the day of release, the phones stopped ringing, the cheques bounced – all within a flash. My whole world just crashed.”
Mimoh also spoke about how the film came together and how superstar Salman Khan helped him during that time.

“Salman bhai has helped me a lot. He has always been like an elder brother. He loves dad. It was his idea to attach the trailer of Jimmy with his film Partner, which was releasing at that time. Sohail bhai even gave the title Jimmy,” Mimoh recalled.

At that time, everything seemed to be going in the right direction. Mimoh believed the movie would be a hit after the teaser got a great reaction in theatres. “I went to watch Partner with my whole family. The theatre was housefull. When the teaser of Jimmy played, there was silence for five seconds, and then people started clapping. They saw me dance and started whistling and dancing. I was 24 and thought, ‘I have arrived. I’ve become a star.’ I was on cloud nine.”

But the excitement didn’t last. The film was released, and reality hit him hard. “By Friday afternoon, everything changed. Phones went silent, cheques started bouncing. It was like a switch had been flipped. I didn’t know how to deal with it. I was heartbroken. I felt like I had failed everyone,” he said.

Jimmy, directed by Raj N Sippy and also starring Vivana Singh and Rahul Dev, only managed to earn ₹1.86 crore at the box office. After that, Mimoh appeared in a few more films, but none of them did well, and by the mid-2010s, roles became fewer and harder to get.   However, Mimoh didn’t give up. He made a small comeback in 2023 with a supporting role in Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s film Jogira Sara Ra Ra. He also appeared in a Telugu movie Nenekkadunna, and most recently, he was seen in the Netflix series Khakee: The Bengal Chapter, which featured actors like Prosenjit Chatterjee, Jeet, Saswata Chatterjee, Ritwik Bhowmik, Chitrangada Singh, Aadil Zafar Khan, and Parambrata Chatterjee.
