I want censor board to release Dare You without any cuts - Denis Selarka

Denis Selarka

Denis Selarka is one brave director for he has chosen the sensitive topic of rape as the subject his debut Bollywood venture, Dare You. Featuring newcomer Alisha Khan, the movie revolves around a Kashmiri college girl who gets atrociously gang raped after landing in Mumbai and how she chooses to respond thereafter. The movie also has a gang rape scene that stretches over a good seven and a half minute in length thereby making it the longest ever rape scene to be filmed in Bollywood.

The promo of the film was released on 16 December making many feel that the movie has been inspired from Nirbhaya's incident. However Denis clarifies that Nirbhaya's incident was never a source of inspiration.

"We started shooting for the movie long before the unfortunate Nirbhaya incident happened. The scripting for this movie happened in the month of June, 2012 much before the ghastly incident of Nirbhaya happened," says Denis.

Dwelling on the research he did for the subject, Denis says, "We spoke to a few rape victims to understand what they went through and have incorporated those in the movie."

The movie which boasts of the longest rape scene, Denis insists, has been aesthetically shot. "My movie is not for the front benchers. At the same time, it is not cheap or vulgar. The scenes are very suggestive and  there is not much exposure. We have not made the scene look vulgar. Whatever happens in a gang rape, we have shown all those without making it look vulgar or cheap. To titillate is not our intention.”

The film's poster has Alisha Khan sticking her middle finger out. A similar poster of film Ungli had drawn the ire of the censor board recently. However, Denis hopes his film will be passed without any cuts by the censor board. "I am sure the censor board will see why I have incorporated those scenes in the movie. I don't want any cuts in my movie. I am ready to get an A certificate or even a double A certificate. My only wish is they should pass it without any cuts."

Denis has plans to release the movie tentatively by February 2015.
