MUMBAI: In a recent interview on Komal Nahta’s Game Changers Podcast, renowned filmmaker Imtiaz Ali opened up about the profound connection between art and society. Speaking candidly about his creative journey, Ali explained how his personal experiences and observations have deeply influenced his work.
One particularly interesting anecdote came when Ali recalled an event from his college days that inspired a key moment in his 2009 hit Love Aaj Kal. “I had attended a breakup party in college. Two seniors broke up, they conducted a party,” Ali revealed. “So, art follows life follows art. There's a symbiotic relationship between art and society. Both are necessary for growth,” Ali concluded.
The breakup party, which Ali witnessed during his college years, became a reference point for a scene in Love Aaj Kal, featuring Deepika Padukone and Saif Ali Khan which eventually became one of the iconic scenes in Hindi cinema.
Throughout the conversation, Ali emphasized how art, in its various forms, plays an essential role in shaping and reflecting cultural and societal shifts. According to him, both art and society are in constant dialogue, with one influencing the other in a continuous cycle. “Both are necessary for growth,” he added, reinforcing his belief in the importance of creative expression in navigating the complexities of the modern world.
