Legendary lyricist Javed Akhtar shared his thoughts on narrative and movies with his daughter Zoya Akhtar. The seasoned lyricist-screenwriter spoke with The Indian Express recently about how women are portrayed and how society as a whole views women today. He pointed out that Javed's best work can come out of a culture that is clear on modern values and goals.

He said, “The writer is a part of society, breathing the same air. This is how great roles come about.”

Meena Kumari in Saheb, Biwi Aur Ghulam, Nargis in Mother India, and Waheeda Rehman in Guide are just a few of the characters Akhtar used to illustrate his points. He claims that when morality is unclear, problems occur.

He added, “Look at these two girls - Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit. They were not less talented than any so-called heroine of the past. But did they get one big role? Not because anybody was their enemy. But at that point, society was not clear about the contemporary woman. 'Main chup rahungi (I’ll stay quiet)' is out, but who is in? Nobody knows.”

The seasoned lyricist went on to say that we're still looking for a contemporary woman while we're out and about in the dark. A beaming father confided that his daughter Zoya Akhtar, who was seated beside him, had asked him to hold off on giving her praise. She claimed that when her father gives her praise, the director of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara finds it "embarrassing."

Still, Akhtar voiced his unwavering conviction, saying that the only times he has seen a "modern woman" is in Zoya's films. He said that it is still unclear how connected the modern hero is to his family and peers. The renowned author claimed that neither great stars nor great personalities exist in the society in which authors dwell.
