From Lagaan to Baahubali: Here let’s have a look at five films that brought the glory of folklore culture back into Indian cinema

‘Lagaan’ (2001), directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, is a magnificent movie that brilliantly weaves historical drama with folklore. In order to escape a burdensome tax, a group of villagers in the colonial India movie challenge their British captors to a cricket match. The film's story, which is based on historical fiction and stars Aamir Khan, Gracy Singh, and an incredibly talented ensemble, embodies the essence of traditional Indian storytelling by showcasing courage, community, and resiliency. 

2) Jodhaa Akbar

Another film directed by Ashutosh Gowariker that is set in medieval India is ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ (2008). The film tells the famous tale of Akbar, the Mughal Emperor, and Jodhaa, his Rajput queen. It showcases the magnificence of Mughal architecture and the great cultural exchange between two separate cultures by fusing historical facts with romantic mythology. The film's appeal is increased by its grandiose scope and lovely soundtrack composed by A.R. Rahman.

The epic ‘Baahubali’ film duology by director S S Rajamouli has had a big influence on Indian cinema. Based on myths and legends from ancient India, the tale starring Prabhas, Anushka Shetty, Tamannah Bhatia, and Rana Daggubati tells the tale of the legendary hero Baahubali and his quest to retake his country. A cinematic ode to Indian mythology and tradition, the Baahubali trilogy has lavish sets, intricate costumes, and breathtaking visual effects.

‘Tumbbad’ (2019), which was directed by Rahil Anil Brave and starred Sohum Shah, is a horror movie that combines mythology and terror to tell the tale of a man who finds a hidden treasure in his Maharashtra ancestral home. A curse on his family and the village is released by the riches.

5) Kantara

The thriller ‘Kantara’ (2022), which is helmed and starring Rishab Shetty, is based on the customs and mythology of coastal Karnataka. It blends the beliefs and customs of the land with tales of man versus nature and land politics. The actor recently won the National Award for the film, and also the sequel to the same is in the making, which will be released next year.
