Landerneau Smurfs the World Record: 3,076 Blue-Clad Fans Set New Global Milestone

Landerneau

MUMBAI: A wave of blue joy swept through the small town of Landerneau last weekend as it officially broke the Guinness World Record for the Most People Dressed as Smurfs in One Place, gathering a staggering 3,076 participants in full smurf regalia.

The event, inspired by a renewed wave of Smurf mania and an upcoming film release, saw residents and visitors alike don the signature blue body paint, white hats, and smurfy smiles as they converged on the town square. Landerneau, located in Brittany in western France and home to just 16,000 residents, has now become the new global epicenter of smurf culture.

“We smurfed the record!” cheered one jubilant participant, summing up the elation felt across town.

This triumphant moment came after two previous unsuccessful attempts by Landerneau to out-smurf Lauchringen, Germany, which held the previous record with 2,762 participants in 2019. After weather setbacks and even a disqualified attempt in 2020 due to technicalities, the victory was all the sweeter.

Among the sea of blue were people of all ages—from 20-year-old student Albane Delariviere, who traveled over 200 kilometers from Rennes, to 82-year-old Simone Pronost, sipping a celebratory beer in full Smurfette attire. Their message was clear: this was more than a record—it was a symbol of unity, creativity, and joy.

“This brings people together and gives them something else to think about than the times we’re living in,” said Mayor Patrick Leclerc, proudly dressed as a smurf himself.

The record-breaking event was supported by Paramount Pictures, ahead of the July release of Smurfs: The Movie. The film studio provided 1,200 free preview tickets and spearheaded a PR campaign that re-energized the town's dream of smurfing the world record.

“Smurfs represent fun, innocence, and imagination,” said Pascal Soun, head of the organizing association. “For a few hours, Landerneau truly became the Smurf Village.”

With perfect weather and perfect spirits, Landerneau has painted itself into the history books in the most whimsical way possible. The town’s smurf-tastic success not only broke a record—it brought together thousands of people in a celebration of color, culture, and community.
