MUMBAI: Hindi Film industry actress Madhoo who played prominent roles in Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu and Tamil cinema in the 90s has recalled her statement about declining the role of Ajay Devgan’s mother if offered. In a recent interview, she negated her previous statement and said that she would take it up as a challenge.
In an interview, Madhoo clarified her earlier statement, ‘That statement was taken out of context. I said if, hypothetically… I am correcting myself now because I have evolved as an actor. I made the statement 2-3 years ago, in some other context. In the 2-3 years, I have realized I have played many different roles. I played an apsara [fairy] in Shakuntalam with Samantha [Ruth Prabhu]… So when I play, as an actor, actually I am enjoying the liberty and freedom of being an actor today. Back in the 90s, we were put in a box. We romanced, we sang, we danced. But now, with OTT, stories and content, I think that is kind of broken away. A lot of great opportunities are coming for every actor.’
She further added, ‘So, today I am thinking as an actor if I do get a role where they say you have to look older than Ajay, and play his mother's role, I would take it as a challenge as an actor. If I get a role where I have to play any lead actor's mother's role, I would look at it as a challenge and not as a sexist, controversy or that kind of a conversation. Let me see if I am convincing.’
The actress Madhoo made her Hindi film industry debut in the year 1991 with the famous actor Ajay Devgn in the film 'Phool Aur Kante'. She has been featured in films like 'Roja', 'Diljale', 'Hum Hain Bemisaal', 'Elaan' and more. In the late 90s, the actress vanished from the big screen. She had said that it was a nervous decision as she was tired of playing romantic roles. Madhoo said in her earlier interview,‘During the 90s, action films and heroes dominated the scene, and my roles mainly involved dancing, delivering a few romantic lines, and shedding tears with parents. While I enjoyed dancing, I realized that I was deeply unhappy with this shift from films like 'Roja'. I recognised that my true passion lay in being an artist and doing meaningful work.’
The actress is making her comeback with ‘Kartam Bhugtam’ a thriller that also stars Shreyas Talpade and Vijay Raaz.
