MUMBAI: In a delightful throwback that’s sure to pique the interest of Bollywood fans, actor Zayed Khan has unveiled a fascinating behind-the-scenes story about how he landed the role of Lucky in the 2004 cult classic Main Hoon Na.
The revelation offers a fresh glimpse into the film’s casting process—and the unexpected turn of events that ultimately led to Zayed’s breakout moment on the silver screen.
Speaking candidly in a recent interview, Zayed revealed that the role of Lucky was originally offered to Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan, and Sohail Khan. However, as fate would have it, none of them came on board, paving the way for him to step into the much-loved character. “I was lucky,” Zayed admitted, “as this role had first gone to Hrithik, Abhishek, and Sohail, but it just didn’t materialise.”

Interestingly, Zayed hadn’t initially approached Farah Khan to audition for the film. He recalled, “I wanted Farah to choreograph Mohabbat Hai Mirchi and called her about it. She asked me to come over to her office immediately. I walked in thinking she’d agreed to choreograph my song—I was thrilled!”
What followed was something straight out of a Bollywood script. “I entered Shah Rukh Khan’s office by mistake and kept wondering what the connection was between SRK and my song. Then Farah walked in, and I asked her if we were doing the song. She told me to shut up—quite literally—and said Shah Rukh was coming to meet me.”
Zayed, a self-confessed SRK fan, was floored when the superstar himself walked in and casually informed him they were working on a film and were considering him for the second lead. “He asked me if I could act, and I told him, ‘I was born to act!’ He laughed, and soon after, Farah told me, ‘Send me your measurements—you’re in my film.’ It was all so filmy!”
The actor described Main Hoon Na as a life-changing project, one that gave him an unforgettable platform and won him widespread admiration for his portrayal of the cool, rebellious college student with a golden heart. His performance continues to be remembered fondly, especially by fans of early 2000s Hindi cinema.
Even two decades later, the film remains a pop culture phenomenon, and this anecdote only enriches its legacy. Zayed Khan’s serendipitous casting story is a perfect reminder that sometimes, the most iconic roles come to those who least expect them—but are ready to seize the moment.
