Jai Ho hasn't exactly received the kind of opening one would normally expect from a Salman Khan movie. The film which released last Friday, collected close to Rs. 17 crore on the first day at the box-office which is way low as compared to Chennai Express and Dhoom 3 which amassed way more than 30 crore.
When asked why his film didn't rake in the moolah that Aamir and SRK's movie received, the Dabangg Khan was honest and forthcoming in his reply. “May be you all expected a bit too much from Jai Ho.”
Trade circles are also abuzz with rumours that the movie will not touch new records as compared to Salman's previous releases. However, we feel the criticism is a bit unwarranted and a bit too early to make. To be fair, Jai Ho released on 24 January which was not a holiday in comparison to Chennai Express which was released on a holiday. The movie has collected 60 crore in three days which is certainly not a bad number. In comparison, Telugu movie Stalin (Jai Ho is the remake of Stalin) had amassed a revenue of 35 crore in all from all sources. So compared to that Jai Ho looks to have certainly started off well.
In an industry that is highly superstitious, we couldn't help but notice a few strange facts. January is jinxed for Bollywood. Except for Hrithik Roshan (Kaho Naa Pyaar Hain and Agneepath) no one has had a good run at the box-office in January. January is also the month when prelims and exams are on which means students have missed out on watching Jai Ho in theaters. Lastly, Sohail Khan has not exactly proved to be lucky for Salman. The last time when Hello Brother happened, expectations were sky-high but unfortunately the movie bombed. These coincidences apart, the biggest let down was perhaps the music of the movie which failed to generate any buzz.
Jai Ho may have started slowly at the box-office and the next few days would be extremely crucial. In an earlier interview Salman had himself agreed to take the blame if the movie failed. “If the collections are not good, it's my fault that I failed to bring my fans inside theatres. May be my fans don't have the money to go to the theater," Salman was quoted saying.
Well, all we can say is it's better to wait and watch rather than jump the gun so soon. After all, slow and steady wins the race.
