MUMBAI: Actor Kajol has been a part of many hit movies of the ’90s and early 2000s. However, over the years, her most popular characters have come under the scrutiny of the audience for the choices that they made.

Recently, Kajol tried to defend all of them, including Anjali of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, who married Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) instead of Aman (Salman Khan).
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which marked Karan Johar’s directorial debut, had Kajol playing a young woman who secretly loved her best friend Rahul in college.
But he was fixated on Tina (Rani Mukerji). Years later, after Tina’s death, Rahul returned to Anjali when she is about to get married to Aman. But, in the climax, Anjali marries Rahul.
During an interaction with Film Companion, Kajol defended Anjali’s decision, and said, “She was young, what can I say? She read too many Mills & Boons, young girls these days, hormonal! She didn’t know what was good for her.”
However, in an earlier interview, Kajol had admitted that had she been in Anjali’s place, she would have married Aman instead of Rahul.
The actor then spoke about her character Isha, from the 1997 thriller Gupt, a film that brought her accolades for her performance in a negative role. She said she would never blame Isha for attacking Sheetal (Manisha Koirala), the best friend of the man she loved, as it was her father who never brought her up well.
Kajol said, “I am on her side, I don’t blame her for this. Why didn’t her father put her in a straight jacket long back? It’s her father’s fault, not her fault. She was built like that.”
Kajol also defended Simran of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge for befriending a complete stranger, Raj, played by Shah Rukh Khan, in a foreign land. For her, Simran couldn’t help it, because of the setting she was in.
“It was the fault of the train. It was the fault of the scenery and Switzerland. She got carried away. It was the scenery, it was the chocolate. Also, she had bad eyesight, we saw her wearing specs, didn’t we?” reasoned Kajol with a hearty laugh.
Next, Kajol also had a defence for Zooni, a blind girl who went on a date with a complete stranger, Rehaan (Aamir Khan), who later turns out to be a terrorist in the 2006 romantic thriller, Fanaa.
The actor debated, “She was blind, so she had lesser choices, so she didn’t have many choices, and Rehaan showed up, then what is she supposed to do, say, ‘No, don’t love me?’ I don’t have another boyfriend, how many boyfriends did she have in line anyway, ek hi toh mila tha usse (She didn’t have options).”
