MUMBAI: Legendary music maestro A R Rahman turns 55 years old today. On the occasion of his birthday, we bring you some lesser known facts about the music genius.
Name Changed:
We all know that A R Rahman is not his original name. He was called Dilip Kumar. In many interviews, he has revealed that he never liked the name Dilip. After coming in connection with Qadri Saheb, a Sufi mystic, he embraced Sufi Islam. It was a Hindu astrologer who gave Rahman his Muslim name.
Music Inspiration:
Rahman has revealed that he takes a lot of inspiration from cult Bollywood films. One of his popular songs Hai Rama from the film Rangeela was inspired by the background score of 1960s' cult film Mughal-e-Azam.
Directorial Venture:
Very few people know that A R Rahman has also directed a film. He made his directorial venture with the virtual reality film, Le Musk. The movie was shown at the NAB, Las Vegas, in a room with multi-sensory Voyager chairs in 2017. The film stars the actors Nora Arnezeder, Guy Burnet, Munirih Grace, and Mariam Zohrabyan. It is yet to get a release in India.
Oscars:
He is also the first Asian to have won 2 Oscars for the film Slumdog Millionaire. But very few people know that the song Jai Ho from the film was originally composed for Subhash Ghai's 2008 dud Yuvvraaj, starring Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Zayed Khan, and Anil Kapoor. It was supposed to be filmed on Zayed Khan in the film.
