MUMBAI: Since the early 1990s, Zakir Hussain has built a solid reputation as a stage performer. However, it wasn't until 2004's Ek Haseena Thi that he made his first appearance in a Hindi film. He has since acted in films like Sarkar, Johnny Gaddaar, and Singham Returns among many more.
Zakir recalled that the director had promised him that even if his part had less screen time, it would still have an impact. Zakir recounted in a recent interview that Saif Ali Khan offered him new underwear for the part because it was agreed that he would have to do the sequence in his underwear during the production.
Saif Ali Khan, Urmila Matondkar, and Zakir played the key characters in the film Ek Haseena Thi. Zakir is a moneylender who is threatening Saif and after his life. He remembered his scene being split into two sections. He spoke with Saif's character in the first segment, and Urmila's character killed Saif's character in the second segment. Due to some scheduling issues, they shot the latter section first, in which Zakir wore track trousers and a t-shirt, but there was a noticeable change on the day of his session with Saif.
“One week later when we were to do the first half, I wore the same clothes. Saif saw and said this wasn’t working. He said I should be naked in the scene. Saif asked ‘Do you have good underwear?’ I said ‘I have what I’m wearing right now.’ So he gave me his brand-new underwear. He laughed and said ‘vapis kar dena’,” he shared in his interview recently.
Although Zakir admitted he didn't mind filming the scene in his underwear, the fact that they had previously completed the second half of the scenario, in which he was wearing clothes, presented a challenge for the crew.
He said, “I suggested that I will sit in my underwear when Saif comes in, then through the scene I will put my clothes on in the bathroom so we can use the second half the way we shot it.”
However, this cut down his on-screen timing in the film. He shared, “So what happened was that all of my dialogues in the scene went off camera. There were just three dialogues where my face could be seen.”
However, the sequence had such an impact that Ram Gopal Varma called him shortly after to offer him a part in Sarkar.
