MUMBAI: Pushpa took over the nation by storm in 2021. The audience was really captivated by its music, action and Allu Arjun’s swag. The makers are all set to make the audience go crazy once again with Pushpa 2: The Rule which is set to be released on 5th December this year.
Pushpa 2: The Rule is directed by Sukumar and stars Allu Arjun and Rashmika Mandanna as leads. This time, Fahadh Faasil has also become a part of the project as an antagonist.
The makers have been promoting the movie in various states of the country and the hype is going up. But the question remains, will this movie join the list of sequels that did better than its original? Let’s have a look at the list of some sequels that did better than the original.
Dhoom 2
Dhoom came in 2004 and raised the bar high with action. It even introduced a new craze of sport bikes all over the nation. John Abraham really left a strong mark with his role as a villain but just when the audience thought it couldn’t get any better, there came Dhoom 2 in 2006 where Hrithik Roshan took the action and heist chase to a completely different level. This truly became a bar of comparison. While Dhoom made Rs 29 Cr in India, the sequel made Rs 112.51 Cr in India.
Don 2
Amitabh Bachchan is surely the OG Don of Hindi movies but if there’s anyone who can take over that role and do justice to it, it is none other than Shah Rukh Khan. King Khan really proved it with his role as Don in the reboot which was released in 2006. However, as if this wasn’t enough, King Khan took things to the next level with Don 2 in 2011. The audience loved action here and it was truly refreshing to see SRK in action mode. While the first part made Rs 50.16 Cr, Don 2 collected around Rs 65.62 Cr.
Baahubali 2: The Conclusion
Baahubali became a historic movie in the Indian cinema to blur all lines between regional cinema and mainstream cinema, making Prabhas the first Pan-India superstar. S. S. Rajamouli's creation came in two parts with the story of Amarendra Baahubali in the first part and story of Mahendra Baahubali in the second part. Thanks to the impact left by Baahubali: The Beginning, the hype for Baahubali 2: The Conclusion became massive and as a result, while the first part collected around Rs 516 Cr in India gross, the second part minted around Rs 1416.9 Cr.
Housefull 2
While the list contains mostly action movies, it’s no wonder that a comedy movie like Housefull 2 has made it to the list. In a time when people were missing some really good comedy, Housefull, directed by Sajid Khan, gave the audience exactly what they required. In 2012, Sajid Khan once again gave us another dose of total madness with Housefull 2 and it truly took the audience for a laughter riot. The 2010 movie made a lifetime collection of around Rs 102.15 Cr. Housefull 2 in 2012 on the other hand made a lifetime collection of Rs 151.6 Cr.
Tiger Zinda Hai
Ek The Tiger, starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, an action-packed love story that later revealed to be the beginning of YRF Soy Universe, released in 2012 and really made its mark for the action and the chemistry between Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif. Kabir Khan who directed Ek Tha Tiger, did not make a return for its second part, Tiger Zinda Hai, a movie that was directed by Ali Abbas Zafar. Ek Tha Tiger minted around Rs 263 Cr and the hype of this movie resulted in the second part doing even better with a collection of around Rs 433.77 in India gross.
Fukrey Returns
While this was unexpected, it’s totally worth it for a movie like Fukrey to make it to the list, showing that content is the real king. With a star cast including Pulkit Samrat, Richa Chadha, Varun Sharma, Ali Fazal, Pankaj Tripathi, Manjot Singh, Priya Anand and Vishakha Singh, the movie really breathed some fresh air with a unique storyline and comedy that connected everyone. The makers of the 2013 comedy movie came back even stronger with a sequel in 2017. Fukrey collected a lifetime total of around Rs 48.94 Cr while the sequel collected around Rs 108.21 Cr, rising up to be a superhit.
K.G.F. Chapter 2
K.G.F. Chapter 1, which gave rise to another pan-India star Yash, released in 2018 and became one of the most talked-about movies of the time. It gave a dark-action theme with visually appealing shots and a dark character as an anti-hero. While the movie collected around Rs 44.42 Cr India net, there came Chapter 2 in 2022 and blew the roof off with a whopping Rs 435.33 Cr India net lifetime collection and this itself speaks volume.
