MUMBAI: After a successful theatrical run, Ashutosh Gowariker’s Marathi film Ata Thambaycha Naay has made its world digital premiere on ZEE5, allowing this powerful and uplifting story to reach audiences across India and beyond. In the film, Gowariker plays the role of Uday Shirurkar Sir, a character based on a real-life senior citizen who returned to school later in life, proving that it’s never too late to chase your dreams.
Speaking about the film’s digital release, Gowariker shared,
“I feel that any film that comes out should have a theatrical release first and then move to all other platforms. So I'm very happy that Ata Thambaycha Naay released theatrically, did very well, and now that it’s streaming on ZEE5, it is reaching a much, much wider audience.
This is a rare film that appeals equally whether seen collectively in the theatre, with family at home, or even alone. All three experiences of watching this movie are very different from each other, yet they are very engaging and enriching. I’m happy that, with ZEE5, global audiences will be able to experience what each and every character in this film has gone through.”
Ata Thambaycha Naay has already struck an emotional chord with critics and audiences alike. Based on the real-life journeys of Uday Shirurkar and Nilesh Mali, the film explores themes of courage, second chances, and self-worth through the lens of elder education.
Reflecting on his personal takeaway from the project, Gowariker added:
“I'm most happy that the one person who gained tremendously—not one, actually, two people who gained tremendously—from this film are the original Uday Shirurkarji and the original Nilesh Mali sir. Because they had actually gone and done it. And what greater joy than them getting all the limelight for this film, through which they’re able to tell their story.”
The actor-director also spoke warmly about sharing the screen with a stellar ensemble cast that includes Bharat Jadhav, Siddhartha Jadhav, Om Bhutkar, Rohini Hattangadi, Prajakta Mali, Kiran Khoje, and others.
“This is a cast I’ve seen in so many Marathi and Hindi films, and I’ve always been enamoured by their intensity and talent. To be on set with them—learning and sharing scenes—was amazing,” he said.
“Bharat Jadhav’s comic timing has always been exceptional—I’ve watched Sahi Re Sahi countless times. Watching him switch gears in this film was a revelation. Siddharth, whom I’ve always seen as a funny guy, was fantastic in a more serious, emotional role here. Om Bhutkar’s approach was equally impressive. And of course, working with Rohini Tai, whom I’ve admired for years, was deeply fulfilling. Though I never directed her, playing her son gave me that closeness.”
Ata Thambaycha Naay blends social relevance with emotional storytelling, making it a must-watch for viewers of all ages. Now available for streaming on ZEE5, the film is a tribute to resilience and lifelong learning.
