I was born in Peshawar. Our families knew each other. As I stepped into the studio for the first time, I came across Raj Kapoor. He was the one who always used to say when we used to play soccer; he was a good goalkeeper. He was a very good referee. Particularly when he used to play in the British Army team, he could assert himself despite being a little boy", told the late Mughal-e-Azam star.

Dilip was further heard telling in the interview, "When I saw him (Raj Kapoor), he used to tell me we both would go into films. I said no as that was not the done thing, to aspire to go into films. I told him tum jana, tumhare abba bhi wahi kaam karte hai, tum bhi wahi karna. He was the first man I met at the studio and he said, I had told you to come to this place. I had not come for any work interview. He was with me before my films and when I entered he was there, waiting. We had a lovely relationship". Indeed! Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor were best friends off-screen.
