MUMBAI: Saif Ali Khan, a rising star in the Hindi cinema business, became an instant sensation when his film Hum Tum was released in 2004. He even received a National Award for it. The much-discussed kissing sequence between Saif and his co-star Rani Mukerji was one of the reasons the movie grabbed news. But when the actor thought back on it years later, he labelled it as the "worst kiss in cinema history."

When Hum Tum debuted in theatres twenty years ago, Saif and Rani's onscreen romance swept the country. In an interview from a few years prior, Saif disclosed that although the kissing sequence caused a lot of commotion in the audience, the actors found it to be quite unpleasant.
He disclosed that Rani had been 'particularly sweet' to him on the set that day since he was afraid to perform the kissing shot, but then asked him to inform the producers that he did not want to perform the sequence. However, Rani reluctantly consented after Saif rejected her demand.
Saif later acknowledged in an interview that although the kiss was "awkward," they nevertheless went ahead and shared it. "It was the worst in the history of Indian cinema," he continued.
The 2004 film Hum Tum was directed by Kunal Kohli and produced by Rani's now-husband Aditya Chopra. In significant parts, the movie also stars Kirron Kher and Rishi Kapoor.
Even though the movie's theatre audience had varied reactions, it ended up being the sixth highest-grossing film of the year. But after Saif won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in the movie, it provoked discussion.
