Before shooting for Dil Se, Priety Zinta had already shot for Kya Kehna and Soldier. However the Mani Ratnam directorial Dil Se that starred Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala became her debut film. Preity Zinta starred in her first feature film as a lead in Soldier (1998). However, Shah Rukh Khan intervened and Dil Se became her feature debut before the Abbas-Mustan film could be released. In an interview, producer Ramesh Taurani revealed that although Preity Zinta was initially signed for Kya Kehna, the movie wasn't released until 2000.

Nevertheless, the actress was cast opposite Bobby Deol in Soldier while it was being made. The producer went on to say that they had a deal with Zinta that stipulated their film would always be released first. She was given the opportunity to accept a small role in Dil Se when she received an offer around this time. That being said, they adhered to the terms of their agreement with her.

However, Dil Se was completed on schedule, and Soldier was prepared for distribution as well. However, Bobby's movie Qareeb's soundtrack was scheduled to be released in June, which caused Ramesh Taurani's Soldier to be postponed. Shah Rukh Khan and Mani Ratnam approached him, pleading with him to release Dil Se before Soldier, observing all the delays. Due to the producer's approval, Dil Se was released ahead of Soldier and Kya Kehna.
