MUMBAI: Actor Shahid Kapoor's wife and entrepreneur Mira Rajput, came under heavy fire in 2017 for what appeared to be a disparaging comment about working mothers. Mira questioned why mothers would want to have children if they couldn't spend time with them and stated that her kid wasn't a 'puppy.' In an interview, Mira now stated that one of the most common misconceptions about her was that she "looked down upon working mothers," and she expressed "regret" for previous comments she had made.

In an interview with the well-known news website, Mira revealed that at the time, she felt "pushed into a corner" since people were confused as to why a brilliant lady of her caliber had decided to be a stay-at-home mother and had adopted a "conventional, conservative approach" to life. Mira added that she thought this way of thinking was "unfair" and that she had wanted to spend more time with her kids at the time.

“While I was pushed in that corner for seeming very regressive, I think I probably acted out by saying things… I don’t think I agree with them right now. I think I have come a long way from that,” she said. Mira accepted that her comments didn’t go down well for a reason, and said, “I can understand why it wasn’t taken well. I think I was in a vulnerable, emotional space. I think I was just trying to defend myself that my choices are also valid.” Mira expressed “regret” for saying what she did and that “a lot of people were hurt by it.”

When Mira married Shahid Kapoor at the age of 20, she landed in the spotlight. Although her initial interview on Koffee with Karan was favorably welcomed, she got into trouble for comments against working mothers on her next visit. Mira claimed that this was a "turning point" that "shook" her in retrospect. She disclosed that she continues to receive hate for such comments.

She claimed that because Shahid had already dealt with the media for 14 years, he gave her a lot of support when the situation first arose. “I think it’s about time I am forgiven for that because life comes a full circle and you make mistakes and you learn from them,” she said.

In 2017, Mira stated during a Women's Day celebration, “You know I can raise my daughter, I can be a good wife, I can set my house the way I like, not in terms of the way things should be but the way a home must be with its values and ideals. So, nothing will stop me after that but I love being at home, I love being a mother to my child, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I wouldn’t want to spend one hour a day with my child and rush off to work. Why did I have her? She is not a puppy, you know. I want to be there for her as a mother, seeing her grow up has, cannot be quantified.”
