Bollywood went unusually quite once the prostitution racket involving actress Shweta Prasad Basu broke out. The usually vociferous filmstars and crusaders of women rights uncharacteristically chose to zip their lips and look the other way while Shweta's character assassination happened in full swing. Only a few had the guts to speak out in support of the young actress and one of the happened to be television actress Sakshi Tanwar who penned an open letter to support Shweta.
Bollywood meanwhile developed cold feet with many including Mardaani Rani Mukerji staying mum when quizzed about it. But not Deepika Padukone who graciously told us what she felt about the entire issue.
"Let me say this. If that is the only thing she could do to support her family and that was the only way in which she could have made money, I would say there is nothing wrong with that. It's unfair to blame her."
Expressing her anger towards general public apathy in Shweta's case, Deepika said, "Why are we not supporting her. Why are we making a scandal out of it. And why don't we step in and help her out if she is facing this issue? Why are those people who hired to do what she is doing not spoken about?
Lending her full support to Shweta in this moment of crisis, Deepika said, "I don't think it is something that one should look down upon. We should get together and support her."
A big salute to you Deepika for having spoken honestly on a topic which has been making other Bollywood celebs nervous and mum.
