82-year old Suchitra Sen, who was nicknamed as Bengal's Greta Garbo, passes away in Kolkata today. She breathed her last at 8:25 this morning; she suffered a cardiac arrest.
The actress had been admitted to the Belle Vue Clinic on 23 December with severe lung infection.
As a matter of fact, the actress, who did not come into the open after her 1978 film Pronoy Pasha flopped, refused the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2005 preferring not to make a public appearance.
Ms Sen began her career with the Bengali film Shesh Kothay in 1952 and is known for her role in Bimal Roy's Devdas (1955) Bambai Ka Babu with Dev Anand and Aandhi (1975) with Sanjeev Kumar.
Sen happens to be the first Bengali actress who was awarded the best actress award at the 1963 Moscow film festival. Later in 1972, the actress annexed the Padma Shri. In 2012, the actress, who paired well with legendary actor the late Uttam Kumar, was conferred West Bengal government`s highest award ‘Banga Bibhushan’.
During the last 26 days, she has been frequently in and out of the danger zone. The state chief minister Mamata Banerjee visited her seven times over the past few days.
May her soul rest in peace!!!
