MUMBAI: Indian writer-director Sudipto Sen, known for his bold storytelling, is set to make waves at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival (EFM 2025) with his latest production, ‘Charak’ (Fair of Faith). The film, produced under his banner Sipping Tea Cinemas, delves into the dark and unsettling world of occult rituals and faith-driven extremities.
Sen gained massive attention with his controversial yet commercially successful film ‘The Kerala Story’ (2023), which grossed US $35 million at the box office. Now, with ‘Charak,’ he is stepping into the international spotlight at one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals.
Set against the backdrop of India’s Charak Mela, an annual Hindu festival honoring Lord Shiva and Goddess Kali, the film is inspired by real-life incidents reported in Indian media. ‘Charak’ explores the interplay of faith, rituals, and human extremities, shedding light on the occult practices, sacrifices, and eerie traditions that continue to exist in the shadows of religious devotion.
With Berlin EFM as its global launchpad, ‘Charak’ is set to ignite conversations, much like Sen’s previous work. The film’s introduction at the Festival underscores its compelling narrative and powerful themes, making it one of the most anticipated Indian films on the international circuit.
