Supreme Court declares gay sex illegal; Bollywood up in arms against the decision
11-12-13 will go down in the annals of Indian history as a dark day when the apex court of this country ruled gay sex illegal. Article 377 which bars carnal intercourse between two consenting adults of the same gender has been upheld by the Supreme Court as valid. This effectively reversed the 2009 decision of the Delhi High court which had earlier decriminalized homosexuality. The Supreme Court has said that only a government can change the law and has thereby lobbed the ball back into the legislators’ court and Parliament. Ever since Supreme Court passed the judgment in morning, Twitter has been abuzz with tweets from B-town celebrities denouncing the judgment and calling it regressive. Shruti Hassan retweeted a lot of tweets protesting the judgment and also wrote on her wall: Retweeting some interesting responses today :) just to understand our "culture" better Alia Bhatt too retweeted : What a tragic day. The Supreme Court has basically re-criminalised homosexuality. I have no words. Popular Marathi actor Atul Kulkarni didn’t mince words while tweeting: SC-Parliament will have to take a stand.(read People). 2 same sex adults don't have the 'legal right' on their sexual act even if in private. India’s bestselling author and columnist Chetan Bhagat wrote: What?! Consensual gay sex ruled illegal in 2014? Shows you how badly India needs new young leaders with a modern outlook. Actor and gay rights activist Rahul Bose tweeted: So much for those believing the judiciary is 'the last bastion of common sense' in this country. Author and former actress Suchitra Krishnamoorthy too lambasted this decision – Supreme Court upholds article 377 making homosexuality a criminal offence. Regressive, stupid & unnecessary. SHAME! While celebrity fashion designer Wendell Rodricks tweeted: Sex for procreation only Q. Victoria 1860? Really now, a nation of one billion is doing it for procreation? India progressive. Wake up! A sad and regressive judgment, really. Let’s wait and watch if our politicians will stand and amend this age-old law which is essential a British relic.
