
MUMBAI: In recent years, Indian filmmakers have been increasingly drawn to the rich tapestry of Indian history, using it as a backdrop for grand, cinematic storytelling. Their fascination has birthed some of the most captivating films and series that have not only captivated audiences but also sparked a renewed interest in this vibrant past.
A prime example of this resurgence is the 2020 blockbuster Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior by noted filmmaker Om Raut, which immortalised the life of Tanhaji Malusare, a Maratha warrior under the great Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The film's success at the box office and with audiences demonstrated a clear appetite for stories that celebrate unsung heroes and the bravery of the Maratha empire. The action-packed sequences and the larger-than-life portrayal of historical figures made Tanhaji a true cinematic spectacle, further cementing the Marathas' place in mainstream storytelling.
Similarly ace filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastaani set against the backdrop of political and historical warfare, wove together valour, grandeur, passion, and sacrifice. The film set the box office registers ringing yet again.
Following the success of these grand films, filmmakers continue to dive into exploring the grandeur that lies in our history.
More recently Disney+ Hotstar's The Secret of the Shieldars recently released on the platform explores the idea of a hidden treasure of the great Maratha king, protected by a secret society. The show has been receiving rave reviews, including for its performances by lead actors Rajeev Khandelwal and Sai Tamhankar.
Adding to this wave is the recently released epic film Chhaava, a magnum opus film starring Vicky Kaushal, touted to be the grandest story this year. With its epic scale and emotional depth, Chhaava promises to bring an emotional connection to the viewers while showcasing the valour of a King revered for his bravery, benevolence and mind.
Then there’s Riteish Deshmukh’s upcoming film Raja Shivaji, a bilingual film about the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, which is poised to make a significant cultural impact. Known for his distinct approach to storytelling, Deshmukh's vision promises to do justice to the story, perhaps combining grandeur with intimate moments of leadership and strategy, bringing the king’s story to life like never before.
These works are more than just retellings; they are a window into the vibrant Maratha history, reimagining it through a contemporary lens. Filmmakers are not only aiming to entertain but also to educate and inspire, making history relevant to today’s audience.
