MUMBAI: Following a protracted illness, well-known Canadian actor Donald Sutherland, who starred in landmark movies including The Hunger Games and The Dirty Dozen, passed away in Miami at the age of 88, according to Variety. Sutherland, who was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, became well-known for a wide range of parts that highlighted his skill and adaptability.
With parts in beloved movies like The Dirty Dozen, MASH, Klute, and Don't Look Now, among many others, he rose to prominence as a counterculture hero. He played romantic leads, villains, antiheroes, and mentor figures with equal skill throughout his career, garnering praise and admiration from viewers all around the world.
One of Sutherland's most recent achievements was his portrayal of President Snow in The Hunger Games series, which helped him regain notoriety in the entertainment world. His portrayals of Judge Parker in the television shows Lawmen: Bass Reeves and Swimming With Sharks in 2022 continued to enthrall audiences. His accomplishments extended beyond the big screen. Sutherland was praised by critics for his performance in the Lifetime miniseries Human Trafficking in 2006 and earned an Emmy for supporting actor in 1995 for his captivating part in HBO's Citizen X.
Sutherland started his career in low-budget horror movies like Die! Die! My Darling! (1965) and Castle of the Living Dead (1963). He soon advanced to more important roles, such as his iconic role in The Dirty Dozen (1967) and his partnership with Elliot Gould in Little Murders (1971) and SPYS (1974). His portrayal of an eccentric tank commander in the WWII action movie Kelly's Heroes (1970), costarring Clint Eastwood, cemented his reputation as a scene-stealer. Later, Sutherland reconnected with Eastwood for the film Space Cowboys (2000), demonstrating his adaptability as a former top pilot. A major turning point in Sutherland's career came when he acted opposite Jane Fonda in Alan J. Pakula's film Klute in 1971.
