
MUMBAI: Former U.S. President Donald Trump has sparked international controversy with a bold new policy targeting the global film industry. On Monday, Trump declared a 100% tariff on all movies produced outside the United States, arguing that the American film industry is "dying a very fast death."

The announcement quickly drew criticism from around the world, including from prominent Indian filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Agnihotri warned of the devastating impact this move could have on Indian cinema.
He wrote, "ALERT: Trump's 100% Movie Tariff Threatens Indian Cinema: Trump's 100% tariff on movies is a disastrous move. If this absurdity prevails, India's struggling film industry will collapse entirely, with no one to save it."
Agnihotri didn't hold back in criticizing the Indian film community either, calling on industry leaders to shift their focus from celebrity culture to real issues. "Indian film leaders must wake up, unite, and fight this threat instead of chasing paparazzi and self-glorification," he added.
