When Timeless Elegance Meets Classic Sophistication: A Look at Raj Kapoor’s Iconic Fashion Style

Raj Kapoor

MUMBAI: Raj Kapoor, beyond his legendary status as an actor and filmmaker, was a true fashion icon of his era. Both on and off the screen, his unmatched style continues to inspire fashion enthusiasts and cinephiles even today. What made him a trendsetter was his ability to effortlessly blend cultural sophistication with simplicity and elegance.

His most iconic “tramp” persona, inspired by Charlie Chaplin, featured in films like Shree 420 and Awaara. With oversized coats, baggy trousers, and a tilted felt hat, this look exuded charm and vulnerability, leaving an indelible mark on Indian cinema. Even today, his tramp look is often recreated by artists and enthusiasts, proving its timeless appeal.

Off-screen, Raj Kapoor showcased classic sophistication, often appearing in sharply tailored suits with pocket squares. His fashion versatility extended to traditional Indian attire like sherwanis and kurta-pajamas, reflecting his cultural roots. Whether at film premieres, award ceremonies, or social gatherings, Raj Kapoor’s fashion choices always made a statement, cementing his place as a style icon

Raj Kapoor created a fashion legacy to such depth that in today’s time, several personalities, and the common public recreate his iconic tramp look. Additionally, the fashion of oversized coats has made a comeback in fashion.

To honor Raj Kapoor’s 100th birth anniversary, R.K. Films, Film Heritage Foundation, and NFDC-National Film Archive of India are presenting Raj Kapoor 100 – Celebrating the Centenary of the Greatest Showman. From December 13 to 15, 2024, ten of his iconic films will be screened in 40 cities and 135 cinemas, including PVR-Inox and Cinepolis theaters. With tickets priced at just ₹100, this event invites audiences to relive his timeless magic on the big screen, celebrating the inclusivity and artistry that defined his legacy.
