Yo Yo Honey Singh teams up with Gulzar

Yo Yo Honey Singh and Gulzar
Wonders never cease. Especially when it comes to wonder-boy rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh. After ripping open Bollywood charts throughout 2013 with nifty numbers like Lungi dance in Chennai Express and Party all night in Boss, Yo Yo has ended the year with a bang that will shake up all his critics and naysayers who claim his songs are anti-women. Last week Yo Yo recorded a song written by the peerless and super-posh Gulzar. Yes, this incredible collaboration for a special song in Abhishek Choubey’s Dedh Ishqiya was planned and perpetrated by the film’s producer and music composer Vishal Bhardwaj. According to a very reliable source, “Yo Yo gets 45-50 offers to do film songs every week. When he received a call from Vishal Bhardwaj Yo Yo thought it was a prank, more so when he was told it was for song written by Gulzar Saab. Considering the wild-child reputation that he has in the music industry Yo Yo could never believe his music could get acceptance from a poet of Gulzar Saab’s calibre.” After verifying the truth of the offer Yo Yo set aside all his other commitments and rushed to Mumbai to meet Vishal Bhardwaj. The song entitled Horn okay please would be filmed on Arshad Warsi’s character of Babban in Dedh Ishqiya. Says the source, “Vishal wanted Yo Yo to sing in the Delhi-UP accent that Arshad Warsi sports in Ishqiya and Dedh Ishqiya. Vishal did a scratch recording with Yo Yo and was impressed by the way he sang the number. Later Vishal worked more on the composition and did a second recording with Yo Yo. Now he wants to do a third version with Yo Yo.” Yo Yo Honey Singh is still pinching himself in disbelief after the experience. Says the super-rapper, “What a year 2013 has been for me! I got tremendous acceptance from Bollywood and I sang for Shah Rukh Bhai, Akshay Bhai and Ranbir. Then at the year-end came this. I’ve idolized Gulzar Saab from childhood. To sing one of his lyrics is a dream come true for a small-town Punjabi musician like me.” Prod Yo Yo to reveal more about this unlikely sangam of the sublime and the street-smart and he says, “The number is an absolutely zany crazy piece of writing. Vishal Bhardwaj and I hit it off from the word go. We come from different musical sensibilities. But we met like two unprejudiced musicians just out to create terrific music.” Yo Yo is now fobbing off 45-50 song offers from Bollywood every week. “I am game to do more film songs. But I don’t want to over-do it. The problem is, producers don’t only want my song they also want me to appear in their film singing my song. That’s time consuming. I can’t allow my live concerts to suffer because of my film commitments. Also, I want to do the music video for my songs on my own. If a producer is using my track on screen it should be done in a classy way. Yeh nahin ke gaana le lo, bas kaam ho gaya. I’ve a responsibility towards my fans. It hasn’t been easy getting where I am. I can’t fool around with the place that I’ve created for myself.” Recently Yo Yo did a song for Bhushan Kumar’s wife’s film Yaariya free of cost. The musician brushes off the generous gesture. “Many things are done for the sake of relations. I am here to stay. I am not here to take the money and run.”
