MUMBAI: In an interesting twist of fate, Zoya Akhtar, the renowned filmmaker, was initially asked to audition as an actor for the film "Bombay Boys." This audition became the starting point of her long-term association with Reema Kagti, as both ended up working as Assistant Directors (ADs) on the same film.

Reema Kagti, hailing from Assam and having spent some years in Delhi, moved to Mumbai for college. The two filmmakers crossed paths during the auditions for "Bombay Boys" in 1998, where Reema was already working as an AD. Zoya, who had returned from a filmmaking diploma at New York University, was auditioning for an acting role.

Despite not landing the acting job, Zoya and Reema found common ground in their love for films. They began writing together and embarked on their cinematic journey. Zoya, who had previously worked on films like "Split Wide Open" and "Kama Sutra," and Reema, who had experience with Rajat Kapoor’s "Private Detective: Two Plus Two Plus One," were determined not to follow the traditional path of being associated with a single director.

Their collaborative spirit led them to work on multiple film sets and write their own scripts. Zoya recalled the time they decided to script a short film together, and though it had its challenges, it strengthened their partnership. They shared their scripts for feedback and supported each other in the writing process.

While Zoya went on to direct films like "Luck By Chance," Reema worked on "Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd." Their uncredited collaboration continued, laying the foundation for a successful filmmaking duo in Bollywood.
