And we thought aapdi Aparaben (Mehta) only acts and dances and oh yes, brings the house down with her comic punches. But apparently, she can also sing beautifully and leave you panting for more. At a recent book launch where she was the chief guest, Mehta was requested to sing (as the MC knew about her hidden talent) and the actress without any fuss called her daughter Khushali, who had accompanied her, on stage and the mother- daughter immediately rendered the popular, soul searching Lambi judaai. The audience sat captivated and after the performance gave her a thundering applause. Talking of her early lessons in music Mehta informs, “I have trained for 12 years under Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. By the time I started acting I had even forgotten that I could sing. Singing requires a lot of dedication. My parents had taken a lot of trouble to train me as a singer and a dancer but I did not do justice to it. Having said that, both these art forms have helped me as an actress. Now when I realise that my daughter has inherited the flair for singing from me; she is a natural without any training. But she is a budding writer and does not wish to pursue singing.” Well, between mother and daughter, they have kept the talent alive.
