Makhmal, a well acclaimed short film that recently screened at the San Francisco ‘Festival of Globe’ (FOG) as the Official Selection of 2015, and won the Best Short Film – Asian Panorama, is slated to release on 5th October through YouTube. It is presented by Colour Bar Entertainment in association with Spotlight. The film written and directed by Faraz Ali is a bitter-sweet tale of a velvet piece that binds a father to his daughter. The film will premiere on the production house’s YouTube channel on Monday;
Jaggu Dada Aka Jackie Shroff needs no introduction having spent over four decades in the Indian film industry. He plays the role of Jamal the protagonist, an embroidery artisan estranged from his daughter enacted by Palak Dey.
Speaking on Makhmal Jackie Shroff said, “It’s a straight from the heart Hindustani film which will be understood globally. It is a big challenge to do a small format film because it’s only the length which is short and not the message. The film lives up to its name (Makhmal). It is really soft bhidu.”
It is for the first time that renowned singer Shafqat Amanat Ali has sung the title track of a short film. Speaking on his association with Makhmal, Shafqat Amanat Ali said, “While short films normally end up having a lot of experimental music, I found the composition and the lyrics of the song in Makhmal absolutely unique. And I loved the track. The song conveys the whole theme and mood of the movie beautifully."
Having done its rounds at various film festivals in the last one year, such as the Bangalore Film Festival, Jaipur International Film Festival, 30 Under 30 Film Fest (New York), the makers of Makhmal plan to release the 17 minute film on YouTube on 5th October.
Faraz Ali, Writer & Director said, “Sometimes while drafting a story, we construct ‘matter’ in a ‘manner’ that it transforms into a ‘character’. Makhmal is one such bittersweet tale where a piece of “velvet” transforms into a ‘central character’ and weaves the unconditional love between a father and his daughter. I have tried to create an immersive experience for the audience by introducing Jamal, an embroidery artist and Saima, his daughter in the golden world of Zardozi.”
Abbas Syed, Producer said “Our endeavour at Colour Bar Entertainment has always been to touch upon simple yet complex emotions of life, all our films depict one such human sentiment/emotion. We are grateful to Jackie dada and Shafqat Amanat Ali for readily agreeing to be a part of Makhmal. We believe it’s the storytelling that got them on board, and that warms our heart.”
