It came as a surprise when Dharmendra lamented at the music launch of Badlapur Boys that he has never ever been mentioned in 100 years of Indian cinema of which he has been a part of for 55 long years. "Despite being a part of Indian cinema for 55 years, I was nowhere mentioned when Indian cinema completed its 100 years of existence. However, that doesn't bother me as long as I continue receiving the love and affection of all my fans."
For someone who started acting in 1960 and has today acquired the status of a living legend, it's a no brainer to assume that Dharmendra must have won many multiple awards for his acting in his heydays when he delivered stellar performances. But surprise looms large when you learn that among the many awards that Dharmendra has won not a single won has been for acting. A look at his Wikipedia reveals that most awards won by Dharmendra have been lifetime achievement ones which more often than not is despised by actors. Despite being nominated four times in Filmfare's best actor category, the actor could never win the award.
Awards of course may not exactly be the yardstick of measuring the brilliance of an actor and there is no doubt that Dharmendra with his chiselled looks and inimitable style of dialogue delivery has always been a crowd-puller in his heydays.
Unfortunately, the presence of other towering legends like Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna and later Amitabh Bachchan meant that his work always remained shadowed while others walked away with greater accolades. Having said that, if what Dharmendra says is true, it surely is shameful that a legend like him was omitted while Indian cinema celebrated its glorious 100 years in existence.
