Never knew Maine Pyar Kiya would become such a big hit - Alok Nath

If SRK has DDLJ, Salman Khan has Maine Pyar Kiya. This passionate love story about a rich brat and simple village bred girl released way back in 1989 still continue to enchant audience whenever it's screened on television. The movie which starred no big name went on to become a sleeper hit and created many careers. Salman Khan instantly became the nation's heartthrob, a title that he still retains in his own right, director Sooraj Barjatya became the hottest director on the block while Alok Nath became the quintessential elder of the honourable Indian family.

As the movie completes a glorious 25 years today, Alok Nath happily reminisces the special moments from the film.

"The best thing about Maine Pyar Kiya is that it has not vintaged yet. People still remember, love and watch it whenever it is played and that in itself is a stupendous feeling."

For Alok Nath, Maine Pyar Kiya was like a dream come true that offered him the best platform to make a successful transition from television to films. "I was a newcomer in the film industry. Mumbai was an alien city then but thankfully, I met the right people. I had just finished Buniyaad and was looking for something that would help me make niche in films. Thankfully, Maine Pyar Kiya happened."

The now veteran actor admits that no one had ever dreamt or predicted the movie's mind boggling success it enjoys today. Shares Alok, "I would be lying if I say that we knew it would become a success. We were all newcomers. Me, Salman, Sooraj, Bhagyashree. None of us ever predicted the movie's success though we knew something good would definitely happen. We all were bubbling with creative enthusiasm which was waiting to be unlocked. When you do things honestly, everything works in your favour."

While no one predicted the movie's success, there was no doubt about Salman's impending stardom even then.

"Salman had that spark even then. The most important thing that he has sustained for these 25 years is his honesty. I remember during shoots he used to carry his own dumbbells and exercise before certain shots that needed him to show a beefed up body. Such was his commitment. Today with all the competition around, it is  remarkable the way he has remained at the top of his game. Also admirable is his Being Human initiative."

Well, let's hope Maine Pyar Kiya remains immortal for years to come.
