Maine Pyar Kiya, a film that defined romance and continues to do so till date completes a glorious 25 years today. As fans across celebrate, we pick five moments that defined the film making it a cult that it is today.
Pigeon delivering love letters
Pigeons were earlier used to denote love and peace and mostly made their presence felt in songs. Sooraj Barjatya however discovered a new utility of pigeons by making them the messenger of love in an era where mobiles and internet were yet to be discovered. So integral was the pigeon to the movie that an entire song was dedicated to it. Kabootar jaa jaa was a runaway hit.
Salman rescuing Bhagyashree from getting raped
How we love when a knight in the shining armour appears in our movies to rescue the damsel in distress. When Mohnish Behl forces himself on Bhagyashree, our hero Salman roughs him up and also ends up impressing the rescued maiden to no end. A top moment definitely.
Dosti Mein No Sorry, No Thank You
A line we often used in school and college originated 25 years ago in this movie when Salman tells the same to Bhagyashree. The next time you hear someone say this remind him or her of Maine Pyar Kiya.
Alok Nath's confrontational scene
This was the turning point of the film. Everything looked hunky dory until an angry Alok Nath, offended at Salman’s onscreen father’s abuses at him and his daughter (Bhagyashree), bursts out emotionally severing all ties with Salman and his family. The scene where Alok Nath throws currency notes around in deep frustration is a moment to behold in the film.
Ek Ladka Aur Ladki Dost Nahi Ho Sakte
Oh Yes! Blame Maine Pyar Kiya for creating this age old myth. While a girl and guy can be friends in today’s generation, what Salman & Co perhaps meant in Maine Pyar Kiya was a handsome guy and good looking girl can never be friends which by the way still holds good.
