Gender-bender: Unconventional flicks on role reversals

Gender. Roles. Stereotypes. We are quite familiar with such terms, thanks to our society and Bollywood movies. But there were times when B-Town flicks walked the unbeaten path. From indulging in role reversal to turning the man-woman dynamics on its head, these movies have managed to create a niche for this genre. We take a look at a few…read on:

Ki & Ka:

Arjun Kapoor plays Kabir, a house-husband, while Kareena Kapoor-Khan dons the role of a high-flying CEO-in-the-making in R Balki’s April release. The trailer has already given us a glimpse of what to expect from the rom-com. Let’s hope that it’s not a clash of egos but a realistic take on modern-day relationships.

Cheeni Kum:

Going against the stereotypes of the society, R Balki’s previous outing had Amitabh Bachchan as Tabu’s prospective husband. Nothing unconventional in that. Except that Big B was a couple of years older than Tabu’s onscreen father Paresh Rawal. And with Tabu doing the wooing part, stereotypes went out of the window. But who are we to decide the norms of a relationship? Who are we to decide the ideal age difference between couples? That’s exactly what the movie tackled. And damn well.

Nishabd:

Another movie that went beyond society’s hypocrisy was Nishabd that had Big B falling in love with a girl (Jiya Khan) his daughter’s age. As long as she wasn’t a minor, their love story shouldn’t be anybody’s business. There are so many stereotypes especially gender related the movie tried to break that it rubbed many people the wrong way. But it remains one of the boldest flicks to deal with love and lust so aesthetically.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu:

Kareena Kapoor-Khan played an older bestie to Imran Khan’s love-struck character. Even though he falls in love with her, she makes it clear that a girl and boy, in fact, can remain friends. Their dynamics and sheer depth of their friendship made us take notice. The movie might have tanked at the BO, but it played a huge role in portraying older women as well, older women and not cougars.
